Citroen C-Zero : Specifications, Review, Features

The Geneva Auto Show 2011 which was conducted in March 2011 saw the entrance of many famous auto manufacturers to the world of Eco-friendly (zero-emission) vehicles. Among them, the new zero emission vehicle C-Zero from French automobile maker Citroen gained everyone's attention. The new Citroen C-Zero is a 100% Electric Car which produces zero emissions and is almost silent on the move. The C-Zero utilizes high energy density Lithium-Ion batteries with greater range. This new technology allows charging of the battery at any time whatever the initial charge state of the battery. The C-Zero is easy to charge using an ordinary plug.

100% Electric Means Zero Emission
Less is definitely more in the Citroen C-Zero - being 100% electric, it has no need for a noisy conventional engine, transmission or fuel tank - and all these adds up to zero Emissions.

Charge While You Ride
Another striking feature of Citroen C-Zero is that if you slow down the car, the Advanced Electric Motor acts as a generator, putting charge back into the batteries. So there is no chance of vehicle breakdown due to low charge.

Perfect City Car
The Citroen C-Zero is very compact with a tiny turning circle of just 9 metres. But once you step inside, you will find generous room for four, plus large luggage space. This is partly possible because C-Zero is an electric car to its core, so the structure was designed from the start to house the batteries under the hood. This also ensures maximum safety in case of a collision and a low centre of gravity for great handling.
There is also room for all the features such as ABS with Electronic Break Distribution (EBD), Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) and a full quota of airbags. All these peculiarities makes C-Zero the perfect city car.

Drive It Just Like Any Other Car
Anyone used to driving an ordinary automatic transmission car will find Citroen C-Zero much familiar. It has two pedals and a lever with four positions. Put the lever in 'D' mode for drive.
Once fully charged, Citroen C-Zero can run a distance of 93 miles. The top speed of C-Zero is 80 mph. Charging C-Zero is very easy. A full charge takes approximately 7 hours, which can be done overnight or while parked during work. There is an alternate quick charge system, which enables 80% of battery to be charged in just half an hour. The cost of recharging C-Zero is minimal, making it far more economical each mile than a similar sized petrol car.

Colours
Citroen C-Zero comes in 7 elegant colours:
  • Antarctica White
  • Lips Red
  • Sunshine Yellow
  • Pearl White (Perlescent)
  • Black (Perlescent)
  • Raspberry Red (Metallic)
  • Cool Silver (Metallic)

Citroen Metropolis and Survolt due for production

Citroen is working hard on bring two of its most recent concept cars into production: the Metropolis premium saloon and the Survolt electric sports car.

Citroen’s effort at breaking into the European executive saloon market with the current C6 failed but Ploué said that Citroën must carry on and the Metropolis is the model that could do that. The Metropolis would take its place as Citroens flagship saloon and may be badged ‘DS9’.

“We cannot afford to let the likes of Audi, Mercedes and BMW forge into Citroën’s heartland supermini territory without fighting back and pushing into theirs. Selling large luxury cars in Europe is not easy at the moment, but I believe Citroën has a great deal more to bring to the market. A large, characterful DS flagship model — we could call it a DS9 to reference the original DS19 — could do great things for us”, Polué said.

In addition, Polué suggested that developing such a car for the Chinese market – which would measure over 5.4m – and badging it as a Citroën, would be a positive financially.

“It’s still our intention to put the Survolt into low-volume production, and we’re pursuing the idea of a one-make race series,” well-placed insiders confirmed.

Citroen DS Inside

Among the most-awaited concept cars at the Geneva show was the Citroen DS Inside, prototype of the twin Chevron, showing the road the company will take in the future, in terms of style, communication and brand image.

Citroen DS Inside-1Citroen DS Inside-2Citroen has managed to include just about everything in the small DS Inside, which will reach the market in 2010 with the DS3 model, heir to the current C3. The model has been created to revive the concept of “créative technologie”, with its unmistakable style, technology, originality, substance and quality. Citroen has enjoyed presenting this upmarketing, but without the price, as rigorously highlighted by the company.

The debut was near-perfect but the only gripe we have was in the choice of colouring. This “Dandy” version was certainly true to its name, with pearl grey matched to bright pink - a far cry from the more elegant “Seduction” version which had dark brown and metallic reflections.

Citroen DS Inside concept

The French carmaker has released the first images and details of the Citroen DS Inside concept which illustrates a new product line. The company says the Citroen DS Inside shows a new concept, called Creative Technologie, but the details on the actual vehicle are slim. The Citroen DS Inside also premieres a new naming system for the car manufacturer. The model line up will be called DS3, DS4 and DS5 (DS stands for Different Spirit).

Citroen DS Inside concept-2Citroen DS Inside concept-1From the Citroen press release:
Renewing models and making them significantly better than their predecessors is already an ambitious program. But some customers want deeper-seated changes as mentalities shift from “wanting more” to “wanting better”. The first approach, consisting in satisfying fundamental mobility needs, addresses customers who, having down-sized, are on the look-out for more economical – and more intelligent – products.

Some would describe this as low-cost, but it isn’t. The real challenge for Citroen is designing products that are less expensive but with no loss in appeal. This approach is perfectly illustrated by the Citroen C3 Picasso, a real recession proof car.

In contrast, the second approach favors motoring pleasure, with no loss in practicality. Customers here are looking for outstanding products that confer status and bring them an all-new automotive experience. They want prestige, thrills and refinement, without the rigid codes of traditional upper-range models. To address this need, Citroen is today launching a new line of products to broaden its current range. The new line will consist of three new cars, positioned in the small, medium and large car segments, launched successively from 2010.

Citroen DS Inside stood and continues to stand for a new approach to automobiles and the future. CITROEN is taking inspiration from its design DNA to strengthen the positioning of its new product line. The range instills the different spirit, that the name DS inspires. Hence the distinctive model line up will be called DS3, DS4 and DS5. DS: Different Spirit.
